Oli Truss, who is 90, lives alone in the UK in a ramshackle house with a cat, a dog, and a pony. The subject of director Georgina Hurcombe's film had been considered strange in her local village when she was a girl, because she was greatly interested in maths. Oli says she likes it when visitors come around, but they mustn't stay too long. Instead, she prefers the company of her animals, who have the run of the house. She tries to be as independent as possible, accepting only the minimum of help from care workers. Strewn around her house are the leftovers of meals and piles of junk covered in mould, leading to maggots and even rats. Nevertheless, the old woman is happy enough and rejects offers of a new place to live. There is one surprising secret in Oli's past: her husband once won a large sum of money and the couple were millionaires. However, the windfall caused them to divorce, and she has no regrets about losing it. The director shows how you can be content if you stay true to yourself, even if others, with a different idea of the good life, are uncomprehending. (One World)
