A major weakness is the monster itself, which simply looks like a person with an ugly wound on their head, which is a scar from brain surgery. There are some unpleasant scenes that you might remember, and for its time, they're not bad special effects. But don't expect anything groundbreaking in that regard either. The movie doesn't add anything to the legend; the only legend that shines in a good light is Peter Cushing.
