Balog Mihály, the Gypsy man from Szabolcs works in Budapest. That is where he is notified that his young wife died. Again he behaves differently from his fellow-men in the Koportos Gypsy settlement: he wants to give a beautiful, rich burial ceremony to his wife. His desperate, three day long efforts are not crowned with success, the burial is a cheap affair from which both the Hungarians and the Gypsies refrain. Only his wife's secret lovers watch the event from a distance. The transportation entrepreneur rips off Mihály whose only means left to pay for the services of the priest is weaving baskets. The late autumn twigs gathered at the risk of losing his life are stolen by the Gypsies in the settlement, and he is almost beaten to death by a dandyish rival. Mihály returns to the capital.
