Nathan Baesel stars as Vernon, a good-natured killing machine who invites a documentary film crew to follow him as he reminisces with his murder mentor (Scott Wilson), evades his psychiatrist/nemesis (Robert Englund), deconstructs Freudian symbolism, and meticulously plots his upcoming slaughter spree. But when the actual carnage begins, where do you draw the line between voyeuristic thrills, mythic evil, and good old- fashioned slasher movie mayhem? (jakelijan virallinen teksti)

englanti The first half will be great fun for horror fans, though everyone will say it’s bullshit. The second half is a classic slasher, with a twist that is not revealed at the end, but at the beginning of that half. The enthusiastic responses made me expect a five-star film, but I have to give it only four, and quite weak at that, due in fact to that second half, which is nothing but average. ()

englanti Whereas Scream enhanced the self-reflection of the victim characters, Behind the Mask, in line with its title, takes a similarly informed look at slasher-flick killers and ponders everything that they must undergo and prepare for in order to get their roles. Furthermore, Scott Glosserman’s debut delivers a fine combination of imaginative meta-horror and the ethos of indie films that pay homage to the films they admire. This second level may evoke even more sympathy for the film. The filmmakers offset the lack of resources with creative inventiveness, where, thanks to the TV reportage format, they can legitimise the fact that we are actually just watching talking heads most of the time. But in the climax, which is characterised by their own love of horror movies, they put the fourth wall back in place so that they can elevate their characters (and figuratively themselves) from the position of knowledgeable fans to the roles of full-fledged horror actors immersed in the genre world. englanti -Dude, a virgin doesn't fuck like that. -He's gonna be pissed... The first three quarters are a fantastic homage that pokes fun at all the clichés of the genre with such irony that I considered giving it a full rating. However, towards the end, the twist you've been waiting for all along actually occurs and it breaks down into amateurish tedium with boring murders and is only saved by Robert Englund's last line. I'd ideally give it a three for the last 15 minutes, but if I subtract them, I'm left with a really good time. -) -Yeah and here I just had to hammer some nails in so the window can’t open. -And won’t they think of breaking the window? -Dude... you wouldn’t believe it, but no.
