englanti When I finally got to see a few Czech silent films for the first time, this one instantly became my favorite. Regardless of the love I give to KALOS, WETEB is something else entirely, and both of these companies make up the best of what Czechs could boast of in the 1920s. It’s a tight drama from a theater environment, and every scene and idea is completely in line with the way in which I dreamed of a Czech silent film. Suzanne Marwille is a fatal vamp, V. Ch. Vladimírov is a torn actor and both are tormented by their intimate experiences... The costumes and sets are in perfect symbiosis. I wish more Czech films were like this, but then I'd be wanting too much. In any case, I applaud this post-war effort at cosmopolitanism, which was the only way not to completely destroy Czech cinema in those years. ()
