The standard bearer of Fred Kelemen's slow cinema. Extraordinary in its form, this is a mature tale about how Marianne and seven-year-old Micha escape from life with a brutal drunk. Mother and son travel through an icebound Germany illuminated by starlight, naively believing that the people they meet along the way will selflessly help them with their problems. The purpose of the trip is to reach the no-longer-existent land of Marianne's childhood and to try to save the remnants of Micha's innocence. (New Horizons International Film Festival)
