After being liberated from the Japanese imperialists in 1945, the Soviet army helped to create the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea under the leadership of the heroic Kim Il-sung. The people began the peaceful process of rebuilding the country. By comparison, the south was controlled by American occupiers who installed Syngman Rhee’s puppet government and tried to forcibly unify the country in 1950. At first, the north drove back the invasion of Syngman Rhee’s troops, upon which the United States sent additional forces under the UN flag. The Korean people nevertheless did not submit to this brutal pressure, and thanks to Chinese volunteers liberated nearly all of North Korea.
