Glauber Rocha

Juonikuvaukset(1)

The Brazilian short film is an order by José Sarney, former president of the Republic, who had been elected governor of the State of the Maranhão, and wanted his friend Glauber Rocha to produce a documentary about the ceremony of his assumption of office. This happened two years after the military came into power; the frankness of the film is total and announces the tone of "Earth Entranced". The short movie doesn't bear with the politician who ordered the work. On the contrary the film is constructed as a true challenge to the demagogic electoral promises: while the politician solemnly compromises to finish with the miseries of the region, they are simply shown, with horrible crudity, in documentary images (miserable houses, infected hospitals, victims of the hunger, tuberculosis...). It's alternating with images of the speech in a terrible contrast between rhetoric and reality, but in the same way pointing at the urgent necessity of transforming the words into action, to promote the social progress.
