1941. Vinyica. Hungarian troops lay siege to the town. Locals flee. A lonely man, however, awaits the Hungarian soldiers and surrenders. Keresztes István, the former president of the 1919 Communist Directory of Tiszakövesd has lived in the Soviet Union since 1920. He is disappointed in the Communist regime and wants to return to his son, Gábor, whom he has left at home. In the battle of Krivoi Rog the daughter of Keresztes, raised in Moscow, becomes the unwitting murderer of her own elder brother. She then joins her father to travel to Hungary. The atheist girl who was raised in a collective is unable to adapt to the life of the Hungarian village. She secretly works for the Russian intelligence, but is deeply distressed by the death of her brother. Finally she turns against the advancing guards and is killed in the battle.
