1918. Fábián Bálint is forced to kill humans on the Italian front. At home his sons drown the priest, the lover of their mother, in the river Kraszna. Mrs. Fábián turns insane. Following his arrival home Bálint becomes the liveried coachman of the baron. During the Commune he protects the family of the baron, during the retorsions the previous soldiers of the Red Army in the village. He gives up his position as liveried coachman and joins his sons as a shepherd. His wife dies and his sons leave the village. Fábián Bálint is unable to understand why he, his village, Hungarians are thus afflicted. He wants to talk to God. During a church-service he goes up to the tower and hangs himself with the bell-rope. (jakelijan virallinen teksti)
